Grant Overview
Addressing Risks in Cooperative Business Models for Local Economic Strengthening
One of the most common barriers to eligibility for grants aimed at supporting cooperative business models led by Black and Latino entrepreneurs is the lack of established operational frameworks. Many applicants may underestimate the complexities involved in cooperative governance, leading to incomplete proposals that fail to meet funders' requirements.
Compliance traps also present significant risks. Organizations often overlook specific regulatory requirements necessary for cooperative structures, such as transparency in profit-sharing and member contributions. This lack of compliance can trigger audits or result in disqualification from future funding opportunities.
Grants will not support entities focused on traditional business models that do not incorporate cooperative principles, such as profit-sharing or community ownership. For example, a simply for-profit business that does not engage in cooperative structures will not qualify. Additionally, funding for cooperative projects that do not include community stakeholders in their governance and decision-making processes will not be eligible.
Common scenarios that can lead to disqualification include organizations failing to demonstrate a clear commitment to cooperative principles or not providing a detailed plan for engaging community members in business operations. Furthermore, attempts to apply for grants without a well-defined roadmap outlining expected outcomes and accountability measures can jeopardize eligibility.
